Name: Ororo Munroe, Storm of the X-Men Door: door pass Canon: Marvel Comics - 616 Canon Point: CANON UPDATE (MAY 2025): Storm #4 (2025) Appearance: look book (uniform and off-duty fashion) History: wiki link ; CR AU (Optional): N/A Personality: [+] COMPASSIONATE Ororo is strong and just, and has a very strong sense of compassion, most evident in her strong compulsion to help and uplift those who are struggling. She often going out of her way to help and uplift those who cannot stand up for themselves. She extends this not only to mutants (though mutants are often her main priority), but to anyone at a disadvantage: minorities, children, anyone who needs support. It first manifests even before her tenure on the X-Men: Professor Xavier discovers her in the Sahara helping locals suffering from drought by bringing rain. It persists when she takes Kitty Pryde under her wing in the early days of the X-Men, fostering friendships with Kurt and Piotr and even Logan. Her compassion grows in scale as she experiences more of the world and the universe. She extends help to the Morlocks, offers help to mutants outside of the X-Men's jurisdiction by establishing the X.S.E. (a global X-Men team). After M-Day she reminds Scott that there are mutants outside the X-Men's usual scope who need her help (many of them across Africa). In her solo series, her very first story was about helping defend an island town against encoaching capitalist developers looking to evict residents to build a beach resort on their homes. She does not sacrifice justice for compassion, though, as one of her main leadership roles was to lead the X.S.E., an investigative branch of the X-Men that looks into mutant-related crime all over the world. She either helps mutants defend themselves, or helps victims against mutants who may or may not have put others in danger. [-] ARROGANT Ororo is a very capable, skilled and respected woman, of many powers and of many titles (bestowed and earned). She is confident, self-assured, strong, has many feats to her name. She herself acknowledges that she has been: a leader, a queen, a goddess. Kings, tyrants and despots have seen the power she commands just by breathing and want her for it. "And why shouldn't they!" is usually the reaction to that. But this arrogance often results in one of her greatest weaknesses: taking on more responsibilities than she should, making costly decisions because a gamble she made failed, people suffering for something she couldn't deliber as promised. She makes bold, arrogant claims to serve and protect people, but more than once she has failed to protect them in times of great need. It happened with the Morlocks in the 80s - she fought Callisto for the right to lead them, won, led bothe X-Men and the Morlocks for a time, but when the Marauders came to attack the Morlocks she was occupied with X-Men business. It happened when she married T'Challa and became queen to Wakanda and she had to split her time between the X-Men (serve and protect mutantkind) and her husband's people - this splits her loyalty in Avengers Vs X-Men (she would ultimately stick to protecting mutantkind). It happens when she declares herself the Voice of Arakko (a nation of battle-hardened mutants) who are attacked by Eternals and she once again fails to get there early enough to fend off the worst of the attacks because, she had other matters to attend to. Her pride extends to after failure as well - because she takes the failure to heart, and on her own shoulders even though it is not truly solely her fault. Kitty dies at Shaw's hand, alone. Ororo had been ferrying mutants in need to Krakoa - so it is not Storm's fault at all, but Ororo feels guilty for it anyway. Still, she seeks to prove herself all the time. Because she is capable of so much, because she knows she has certain influence, she will always make the effort to lift up everyone who needs her assistance. [-] RUTHLESS Ororo has a regal serenity that's both part of her natural personality and borne of her powers. Her emotions influence the weather, so it's become necessary for her to have a long temper. However when it is triggered, Storm becomes almost explosively ruthless and scary. It manifests in rather dramatic fashion - lightning bolts, inclement weather - but also in serious threats to kill. She's had to be held back (by Wolverine!) from killing Emma when she first tampered with Ororo's mind. Nightcrawler has had to talk her down from lighting up an anti-mutant gathering that spread hateful speech to their face. In battle, she is not afraid of literally taking beating hearts from bodies if it means preventing a bomb from going off (she did this to Marrow when she fixed a bomb to her heart). Of course, Ororo is someone who will look at all possible options to save everyone (instead of sacrificing one or a few for the benefit of all), but sometimes it means making tough calls, and Storm is capable of making that call when it comes down to the wire. She can, and will, snatch the air from her foes' lungs or tosses a well-aimed knife into her enemies' eyes if she deems it necessary. [-] DISTANT Storm has a surprisingly small circle of genuinely close friends. She is regarded as a one of the kinder and more welcoming members of the X-Men, establishes relationships with much of the team over the years, and is always ready to offer advice and counsel... but she trusts very few with who she is beyond being "teacher, leader, queen, goddess". This distance also results in her not truly knowing too many people in return. Her advice can be sound, but not always appropriate or even welcome. And there are times that Ororo doesn't quite know what to do or what to offer if someone does not take kindly to her approach. She's been called a sell-out and "removed" more than once, when she's tried to offer assistance. This is part of why she was so antagonized by Callisto of the Morlocks - how can Storm offer to help them or even begin to understand them, when her powers are regarded so fondly, when Ororo herself is beautiful enough to pass among the general, human public? Perhaps that's why she has few attachments over her long publication history? She isn't one to make deep friendships easily (because trauma, because powers, because she holds herself apart to set an example to others), and her responsibilities often come first before her relationships. Yes, she learned how to be a best friend with Jean, fostered a close, quasi-parental-mentorlike role to Kitty, became comerades-partners-confidants with Logan, Kurt, Remy, even a wife to T'Challa for however brief a time, but these are exceptions rather than the norm. She's slow to trust others to come close enough to see what she's like when she's just 'Ro. Yukio has said that there's a free spirit in her that's just waiting to be liberated, and she often puts a lid on that. Logan says there's been a bad girl hiding in her all this time, she just rarely lets it out. Few have seen these sides to her, always only when she allows herself to be vulnerable, and it will take a lot of time and effort for her to open up and trust others to build close relationships in Duplicity. Powers and Abilities: Weather Manipulation Storm can manipulate the weather around her with a thought - that is, call forth rain, hail, snow and sleet, summon winds, fogs, mists, tornadoes and hurricanes, generate/(re)direct lightning to strike down her enemies, and adjust temperature and pressure to her liking. Storm can also do the opposite - she is as capable of dissipating such weather conditions as she is able to summon them. Her powers also give her some resistance to extreme temperature change, as well as the physiology to withstand sudden changes in pressure since her control over the wind allows her to fly at the speed of the wind and at differing atmospheric levels. Duplicity Nerf: I'd prefer for her to still have access to all said skills, but at a much smaller area of influence. In current canon she can establish an atmosphere where there was none for a whole planet, but in-game she'll only be able to influence the weather over several blocks, but not the entire city. No-Powers Combat Officially she can hold her own without powers, and has had to since she was officially depowered in the 80s. She can fight hand-to-hand so long as her opponent isn't physically large enough to overpower her via brute force. She is trained to handle firearms and some staff-combat, but she prefers to fight with knives. Ororo hides up to eight knives in her uniform. She keeps them on her person in case of a no-powers situation, which happens more often than she likes. Most recently at her current canon point, she was one of Krakoa's champions for the X of Swords event, where she faced off in a "sword" fight against Death. The enemy made her drink something (alcohol of a kind?) which made her effectively powerless, but she held her own and secured the win, left the enemy to be devoured by zombies :) Lockpicking and general thievery Ororo is a former thief as well. She can sneak past security and tinker with locks both manual and uh digital (Marvel tech...). She recently stole a ceremonial sword from a high securty Wakandan vault for a big X-Men event because Wakandan royalty couldn't release it to her without consequence. Magic Added this in case magic ever comes up as a plot point. Ororo has latent magical abilities that she herself never uses. She only really knows this due to alternate versions of her who have used it, and because her mother comes from a line of sorceresses, so it's brought up occasionally. It's being revisited in the Gambit 2022 issues so she might be retconned into knowing all this time, but just doesn't use for... whatever reason! TLDR, She has the magic, but she doesn't really use it. Inventory: 1. Her classic tiara (lockpicks not included) 2. A knife she can slip into her ponytail. The last one in this page. Canon Update
Personality Changes:
Ororo has claimed a lot more titles and has had to prove herself worthy of these new roles and duties. This has made her a lot more likely to throw her powers around, with a focus on how broad her powers are, how precise she can be and knowing full well that, as an omega level mutant, the strength and reach of her power have no limits. She has had to prove that raw power is one thing, but experience and teamwork is another. (X-Men Red #1-ongoing)
She's also had Magneto delete her Cerebro backup from Krakoa's resurrection protocols - to show solidarity with Arakkii, and as proof of how much she values this life that she has. But then Erik died in her arms, after a fierce battle they'd fought together. He chose to go, told her that he didn't want to be resurrected like the others, and that's strengthened her belief that living is valuable and death should mean something even further. (X-Men Red #4, #7 2022)
She's approaching a point where she is more critical of Charles and the Quiet Council. But she's also been away from Krakoa more, and whenever she's back to do council duties it's to put out a new fire. Including the mess that X-Force has become: that Hank has been getting away with atrocities, including the repeated deaths of Logan (prompting Logan to murder one of Hank back.) Ororo is the one to push for change and accountability, for shifting X-Force's leadership to someone new and trusted. (X-Force #39 2023)
She broke things off with T'Challa officially after she discovers he had lied to her and turned Nezhno into a sleeper agent planted in Krakoa for Wakanda. They're now at a point where she helps him when he needs her, but dismissive of him when he doesn't. (Black Panther #6 2022)
She visited Wanda after Erik's death - this led to a little adventure where Wanda encouraged her to dabble a little with the magic she's inherited from her mother's side. (Scarlet Witch #2 2023)
Canon Update 2 [approved]
- After the eldtritch demon god Eégún instantly kills her in Dr Doom's castle, for reneging on the "deal" that Dr Voodoo made on her behalf to restore her body to peak health/prevent radiation poisoning from killing her. In what seems to be heaven(??), Ororo has a talk with the spirit of her father, who essentially tells her that Earth isn't done with her yet and urges her to go back to her life/wake up.
- She will be waking up to Duplicity instead of back in Doom's castle.
- She will not have the powers granted to her by Eternity yet.
Notes: She is also from a canon point that she is on the main Avengers team roster as led by Sam Wilson and Carol Danvers. Her teammates on that team are: Carol, Sam, Tony, Wanda, Vision, and T'Challa. Their headquarters are the Impossible City, a space station floating in Eearth's orbit.
Physical Changes:
- She will still have the body that Eégún restored for her. In Dr Voodoo's words, she is "the healthiest human being on Earth" - every possible illness or sickness or effect of aging has been eradicated from her body.
Personality Changes:
With this canon update, Ororo will be from after the Fall of Krakoa. The loss of a safe haven and home for mutantkind will leave her with complicated, mixed feelings. A population of thousands of mutants are able to live well and live safely on Krakoa, but Krakoa now exists outside of time and space. This means the rest of the mutants who chose to stay on Earth are once again hunted and living on the run, back to how things were before Krakoa was established. Many mutants are still manifesting, and they have nowhere to turn. Storm of the X-Men is now operating as a mostly-solo hero while other X-Men are sticking together as teams in different parts of the global north, everyone assisting in the ways they think best. While the other X-Teams have stationary headquarters (Alaska, Lousiana, Chicago), Storm has a lavish, floating skyship with landscaping that mostly hovers around Atlanta, but is fully mobile and can be brought anywhere in the world. Because Ororo is Ororo, she made sure that Tony Stark and Shuri worked on it to ensure it has no greenhouse gas emissions. It also houses a couple of Evangelion-like gundams, because... of reasons?? These robots help defend her Sanctuary.
In general, Ororo is somewhat less warm and personable than people from Duplicity may remember her to be. Over her time in the city, she had become sociable and tried to make communities of friends, had found lovers and partners, and became somewhat well-regarded as people looked to her as a sort of point of contact and interest, which worked well with her personality. She's good at inspiring people to mobilize and make connections. After all, she has always led people, not armies (even if she's also good at leading armies!)
But from this new canon point, after all the trauma of: being betrayed by Charles, learning about a terrible Sinister future, fighting a civil war at truly great costs, saving and losing the mutant island paradise of Krakoa... Ororo might appear more withdrawn and more serious. She has reverted somewhat to an old habit of distancing herself from everyone. She is still "obsessed" with responsibility - Sam Wilson and Thor appealed to that sense of duty when they convince her to join the Avengers - and even takes her responsibilities to literal new heights. Ever compassionate, Ororo uses the Storm Sanctuary to house homeless mutants or mutants on the run. She grows all the plants she needs for the Sanctuary to be self sufficient, and even takes time to care for some endangered animals. Ironically, this all happens as she literally distances from all of her closest friends and family. It's not clear why she's doing so, but she's insistent on doing things under her own name. She's still interacting with people - she's on good terms with the Avengers, and she does keep in touch with Scott's team in Alaska and Rogue's team in Louisiana, but largely she keeps to herself in her castle in the sky.
On her own and away from the shadows of Charles's dream, her personal principles are tested every day. She tries to do what she feels is right, even if it's not always the easiest way. She seems to think this is best done away from a team, so her actions don't have to have a direct impact on them personally. (ex. when she reports a truthful version of a radiation explosion at a power plant caused by a young mutant. However, this action does give reason for more humans to be distrustful of their kind, so... is she really making the right decisions by herself? Unclear!)
There's still a large part of her that undeniably craves the connection and safety that can only be found with her peers and loved ones. It's not a coincidence that she spends those mandatory seven days without powers with a very specific team of X-Men. But the urge to do what she feels is right had her burying that craving and desire for companionship. Even if she knows that it's not a weakness to work with others, she has been actively setting aside the sort of companionship she craves. She willfully left the happiness, safety, security, and love that she feels with that team even after Rogue urges her to stay with them. All this, just to go and face off with Dr Doom when he summons her for what she suspects is an oncoming war simply because she assumes responsibility for it. It has been easier for her to justify setting love and happiness aside because she feels needed elsewhere and her happiness is not as important as what she can do for the world.
Waking up to Duplicity after her death/canon update will challenge her to accept that she's happiest where she has the genuine love of her friends and family, especially since there's nowhere to run here, and no "greater battles" to fight/feel more needed in. She'll be forced to reckon with what living with loved ones does for her, instead of always thinking of what she can do for them.
She'll be retaining her three negative traits (arrogant, ruthless, distant) but I'll be noting her top negative trait to be distant instead, to reflect the canon update.
Power Changes:
- Magical Ability | As of Storm #2 and #3, Dr Voodoo points out that what seems to be a weakness (having no access to her mutant powers) can actually be easily amended if she would only tap into her magical heritage. Prior to this arc, she outright acknowledges her magical background only once, on an adventure with the Scarlet Witch, and Ororo just improvised an incantation.
By this canon point, she can and will tap into the folk magic of her people through spells taught by Dr Voodoo. Now, not only can she can sense and see magic, but will also cast spells. For Duplicity, she will only use the Ilé spell that Voodoo taught her: it summons a semi-solid apparition of an animal of her choice to aid in combat, like so: [ image ref ]. As of the canon point, she has been seen summoning an octopus and a killer whale.
- Hand to Hand Combat | Not a change, but she's recently been training with Wolverine (Logan) again to polish her hand-to-hand combat ability because she had to go without powers for seven days. At the end of their training, she can get Logan into a chokehold and suplex him in ways that he can do to her.
Lastly, if this is approved, I'd like to have it in effect once she wakes up from her hiatus-coma next week! Thank you!
ISSUES THAT HAPPENED
• Sins of Sinister, the Quiet Council
She was told about the possible AU known as the Sins Of Sinister (which later helps lead to Charles' mental breakdown) - knowing that too many of the Quiet Council has been compromised by Sinister leads Ororo to try and assume more responsibility for the Council... Except she also has duties to the Great Ring on Arakko (Mars). Emma Frost calls her out on her split attentions, the sheer arrogance of assuming she can be answerable to both. Ororo tries to compromise by giving her votes (she was already holding Kurt's) to Piotr (also actually compromised) - showing that she's aware of how she takes too much on, and tries to mitigate it. (It doesn't work! Everything goes to shit! 😀)
- Immortal X-Men #11
• Civil war on Arakko
She led and won a war for a faction of mutants that lived on Arakko (Mars), at great cost! She's hardened by the experience, and has tapped into a lot of her omega-level mutant powers for plenty of the fight against Genesis and Annhialation. She witnesses Richard Nova sacrifice himself to save her, and she will be rattled a little by how people simply put their lives on the line for her. The war also reaffirms how important life is to Ororo - she isn't willing to use a favor from the elder Eternal (Uranos) to kill a population of mutants simply to kill the entity known as Annhialation. The
- X-Men Red vol 2 #9-end, Immortal Thor #3-4
• Resurrecting Magneto
After winning the war on Arakko/Mars, she has a dream of Magneto calling out to her for help. Driven by compassion and duty and responsibility, she goes on a trip to the afterlife to help convince him to come back to the land of the living. Through that journey, her "obsession with responsibility" is tested, her compassion and self-sacrifice are put front and center. She grapples with perceived responsibilities and re-learns that working with others is a strength, not a weakness.
